Spinal surgery is a specialist area of orthopaedics. It is a very delicate and skilled surgery close to the spinal cord which carries information from your pets brain to their legs, bladder, tail and various parts of the body.
The most common spinal surgery is for disc disease and disc prolapse. This is a very delicate surgery as the spinal cord is surrounded by bone which can be challenging to reach without damaging the spinal cord. Often our surgeons will inspect the spinal cord in its problem area and remove and material pressing on it. Most pets will make good improvement post surgery provided the spinal cord was not in an already injured state and unable to be repaired.
The most common surgeries are for
